It affords me a great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Accounting at University of Abuja.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department has developed from twenty-eight students in 1992 to a capacity of over a thousand in recent times. The Department offers an enabling environment for scholarship in addition to its ability to rigorously impart knowledge that is relevant to the workplace; this is achieved through offering an impressive range of courses to provide pragmatic, professional and theoretical training for careers in several industries, teaching field, non-governmental organizations and public sector.

The availability of Accounting Laboratory equipped with relevant hard and modern accounting software and statistical packages have ensured that our graduates will continue to be at a competitive and professional cutting edge. This unique advantage has led to a healthy and robust ‘marriage’ between modern information technology and accounting practices that meet the demands of the 21st century. Our curriculum reflects many years of teaching experience and is continuously updated to incorporate the latest development in accounting and important innovations in academic research.

With a commendable and improving number of committed and disciplined lecturers on professorial cadre as well as numerous PhD holders/candidates who are themselves fellows and members of various accountancy professional bodies, the Department is today widely known for its scholarship and discipline. The excellent representation of our products in various accountancy professional bodies like the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) among others attests to this claim. The Department has consistently produced student who have excel in the market place, this is attested to by several products of the department who have excelled in various field of endeavors.

In other words, our mantra is to train accountants who are physically fit, emotionally stabled, socially cosmopolitan, professionally sound, economically advantaged and ethically upright in our ever changing world. So if you are an individual who strive on challenges, looking for a career that offers mobility and flexibility in an era where graduate employment is on the decline, then a degree in accounting from University of Abuja will not limit what you can achieve. MISSION

To produce high quality graduates in Accounting that contribute (through research and publications) towards the growth of Accounting knowledge and the improvement of the quality of professional practice in Nigeria and on the international scene.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  • To produce accounting graduates with sound foundation for scholarships and professionalism in order to keep pace with the ever-rising demands for accounting scholars and practitioners in the accounting world.
  • To inculcate requisite attitude, ethics, moral standards and skills of professionalism among its graduates.
  • To facilitate the creation of entrepreneurial spirit among its undergraduates who can help to exploit the available resources and opportunities in the country and elsewhere.
  • To help produce teaching materials and literature more appropriate to the Nigerian environment through research and cross-fertilization of ideas in the classroom.
  • To provide forum and platform that build synergy and collaboration among accounting professional bodies and governments with a view to promoting accounting profession.

Programmes

The Department runs both undergraduate and postgraduate courses namely: B.Sc. Accounting, Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, M.Sc. Accounting and Finance, Master in Accounting, and Ph. D Accounting.

B.Sc. Accounting B.Sc. Accounting is a four (4) year full-time programme aimed at producing dynamic Accounting graduates with sound foundation and can compete anywhere in the world. The requirement for B.Sc. Accounting is five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any two social science subjects at the Ordinary Level (‘O’ level). JAMB subject combination must include Mathematics, English Language and Economics. B.Sc. Accounting is a four (4) year full-time programme aimed at producing dynamic Accounting graduates with sound foundation and can compete anywhere in the world. The requirement for B.Sc. Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA)

The Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting is an internationally recognized qualification in providing candidates with the competencies and knowledge necessary for the private and public service in challenging business environments. It is designed for graduates in accounting who obtained their accounting degree from any recognized university with not less that third class award; graduates of higher national diploma in accounting (or accountancy) from any recognized polytechnic with an award not less than Lower Credit; and graduates of other disciplines from recognized universities. The PGDA is a full-time Diploma. It runs for a minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of four (4) semesters. The award of the degree shall be based on course work and Project to be supervised and assessed by a Supervisor and External Examiner.

Master in Accounting (MAC)
The Masters in Accounting (MAC) is a part-time programme designed for both accounting graduates and professionals which allows flexibility for those with other professional, official or personal commitments. It covers both depth and breadth of knowledge in specialization areas comprising public sector accounting and finance, taxation and forensic accounting. Candidates are expected to choose from the three specialization options. MAC is designed to develop key personal and professional skills including decision-making, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and presentation skills. These skills when acquired, are necessary on research and technical issues in the three areas of specialization. For interested candidates in Taxation option, the programme provides an opportunity for them to develop their tax skills and for practitioners to update and hone their knowledge of tax. For interested candidates in Forensic Accounting option, the programme will provide a comprehensive range of skills covering the three core areas of forensic accounting – litigation support, expert witnessing and fraud examination. Students will also learn to apply specialised accounting skills in a range of areas including business valuation, assessment of economic damages, proceeds of crime, fraud and money laundering, among other opportunities. For interested candidates in Public Sector Accounting and Finance option, the programme will provide requisite knowledge in public sector accounting and finance for staff of relevant public agencies, ministries and parastatals, including graduates of accounting and other related disciplines who may want to specialize in public sector accounting and relevant field of endeavor.

MSc. Accounting and Finance

The M.Sc. Programme is designed to inculcate the requisite intellectual/conceptual foundations that will permit meaningful participation in the discussion or resolution of the problems which confront the accounting discipline in the contemporary world. It also designed to encourage research into problems which impede the maximum contribution of accounting to national development and well-being of the people. The programme helps to develop skills in logical reasoning and critical analysis and improve the capacity of students in formulating sound accounting policies and strategies. MSc. Accounting is full-time with a minimum duration of three (3) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters.

Ph. D Accounting

The Doctor of Philosophy is the mark of highest achievement in accounting scholarship. The Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting at the University of Abuja is designed to produce scholars who will conduct top-tier, original research that makes a significant contribution to knowledge within the accounting discipline. By the completion of the program, students are expected to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the theoretical, conceptual, and research foundations of accounting. While teaching is an integral part of an academic position in accounting and will be required by students in the program, the primary focus of the Department of Accounting on PhD Program is acquisition of research skills. The combined experiences achieved through the PhD program are designed to prepare the student to be a researcher, teacher, and colleague at the university level. Ph. D Accounting is full-time with a minimum duration of 6 semesters or 36 calendar months and a maximum duration of 10 semesters or 60 calendar months on full-time.
